This September 12, 2026 snapshot excludes bonuses, extra flying, benefits, deductions and training-pay differences. Published premiums may expire; confirm the applicable rate before budgeting.

The regional-captain and major-airline first-officer stages use the $232,140 BLS May 2025 occupational median for airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers. The median-based comparison retains the first two Envoy years, then uses this median for every remaining airline year. It is a comparison using today’s occupational pay, not a measured typical career outcome.

The main illustration’s final stage uses a United 777/787 captain in company pay year 6: $462 per credit hour (January 2026 contract table, page 39) × 73-hour reserve monthly guarantee (section 3-C-1-b-(1), page 42) × 12 = $404,712 annualized. The guarantee corresponds to 17 reserve workdays with full availability; absences can reduce it. Higher guarantees in some bid periods, extra flying, premiums, profit sharing, per diem and retirement contributions are excluded.

Company pay year 6 follows the assumed five years as a major-airline first officer. Reaching that captain seat is an assumption, not a promotion promise. This example holds the January 2026 year-6 rate constant throughout the captain stage; later seniority increases and future contract raises are not modeled. The BLS top-10% statistic is context only and does not determine any stage’s pay. Both career totals are hypothetical calculations, not BLS lifetime-earnings statistics. Inflation and employment gaps are not modeled. Training costs are shown separately and are not deducted.
