/// 01 OVERVIEW

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Airline Pilot Academy program is Venture West Aviation's flagship accelerated training pathway, designed for students with zero prior flight experience who are committed to becoming professional airline pilots.

Over the course of 12 to 14 months, you'll progress through six structured training phases — earning your Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate, CFI, CFII, and Commercial Multi-Engine Add-On — giving you the complete certificate stack airlines require.

This program is built for career-focused students who want a clear, structured path from their first discovery flight to the flight deck of an airliner. Training takes place at Falcon Field Airport (KFFZ) in Mesa, Arizona — one of the best VFR training environments in the country, with 350+ VFR days per year.

/// 02 CURRICULUM

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Six certificates and ratings, completed in sequence, building progressively toward your airline career.

01

Private Pilot Certificate (PPL)

60 flight hours
3 sim hours
90 ground hours
10 weeks

Your foundation in aviation. Learn the fundamentals of flight, navigation, airspace, and aerodynamics. You'll train in our Piper Archers, mastering takeoffs, landings, cross-country navigation, and emergency procedures.

FAA written exam + practical checkride
Solo cross-country flights
Night flying proficiency
Carry passengers for personal flying
02

Instrument Rating (IR)

60 flight hours
48 sim hours
75 ground hours
8 weeks

Master flying solely by reference to instruments. This rating is critical for real-world airline operations and trains you to navigate in clouds, low visibility, and adverse weather using precision approaches and instrument navigation.

ILS, VOR, GPS approach procedures
Cross-country IFR flight planning
ATC communication proficiency
Hold patterns & procedure turns
03

Commercial Pilot Certificate

40 flight hours
55 ground hours
6 weeks

Elevate your skills to professional standards. Commercial training focuses on precision maneuvers, complex aircraft operations, and the aeronautical decision-making expected of a professional pilot. This certificate allows you to be paid to fly.

Complex & high-performance endorsements
Chandelles, lazy eights, steep spirals
Precision landings (power-off 180°)
Night commercial operations
04

Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

14 flight hours
80 ground hours
6 weeks

Learn to teach others to fly. Becoming a CFI deepens your understanding of aerodynamics, regulations, and flight maneuvers while developing the communication and leadership skills airlines value. Many students build flight hours as instructors right here at Venture West.

Fundamentals of instruction (FOI)
Spin endorsement & training
Lesson planning & student evaluation
Build hours toward 1,500 ATP minimums
05

Certified Flight Instructor — Instrument (CFII)

14 flight hours
40 ground hours
4 weeks

Expand your teaching credentials to include instrument instruction. As a CFII, you can train students for their instrument rating, giving you more teaching opportunities and accelerating your hour-building toward the airlines.

Teach instrument approaches & procedures
Simulated IMC instruction techniques
Greater demand = more flight hours
Strengthens your own instrument skills
06

Commercial Multi-Engine Add-On

14 flight hours
10 ground hours
4 weeks

Train in multi-engine aircraft to complete your airline-ready certificate stack. Multi-engine experience is essential for airline hiring. You'll learn engine-out procedures, Vmc maneuvers, and multi-engine aerodynamics in our Piper Twin Comanche.

Engine-out emergency procedures

AFTER GRADUATION

BUILD HOURS & BEGIN YOUR AIRLINE CAREER

After earning all six certificates, most graduates build flight hours as a CFI — often right here at Venture West. Once you reach 1,500 total hours (the FAA's ATP minimums), you're eligible to apply to regional and major airlines. Many of our graduates join cadet programs early in their training to begin building seniority.

/// 04 FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No prior flight experience is required. The Airline Pilot Academy program is designed specifically for students starting from zero, taking you from your very first flight lesson all the way through earning every certificate and rating you need for an airline career.

The program takes approximately 12 to 14 months of full-time training. Your exact timeline depends on weather, scheduling, and individual progress, but our structured curriculum is designed to keep you on an accelerated pace.

You will earn six certificates and ratings: Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate, Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Certified Flight Instructor — Instrument (CFII), and Commercial Multi-Engine Add-On.

Most graduates build their remaining flight hours by working as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). Many of our graduates instruct right here at Venture West Aviation, earning a salary while building hours toward the FAA's 1,500-hour ATP minimums required for airline hiring.

Yes. We offer financing options to help cover the cost of training. Veterans may also be eligible for VA education benefits through our affiliated college degree pathway. Visit our Financing page for details.

You will train primarily in Piper Archers for single-engine training and in our Piper Twin Comanche for multi-engine training. All aircraft are well-maintained and equipped for both VFR and IFR operations.

Falcon Field Airport (KFFZ) in Mesa, Arizona offers over 350 VFR days per year, meaning fewer weather delays and more consistent training. The uncongested airspace and diverse terrain also provide excellent real-world training conditions.

The Airline Pilot Academy program is a full-time, accelerated program with ground school, flight training, and self-study most days. While some students manage part-time work, we recommend committing fully to training in order to stay on pace and complete the program within 12–14 months.
