OUR STORY
Venture West Aviation wasn't born in a boardroom. It was born from frustration — from two pilots who experienced the failures of aviation education firsthand and decided to build something better.
This is the story of how a broken system, a global pandemic, and two determined aviators created the school that's redefining pilot training.
THE INDUSTRY WAS BROKEN
Tyler Johnson started his aviation career the way most students do — enrolled in an accelerated flight training program that promised a fast track to the airlines. He earned his Private, Instrument, and Commercial Pilot Certificates. But he knew something was missing.
The training was fast. But it wasn't deep enough for him to truly grasp the concepts. Tyler didn't want to be good. He wanted to be great.
So Tyler moved on. And over the next several months, he attended multiple flight schools across the Arizona valley. Every one fell short — inconsistent instructors, outdated methods, no structured curriculum.
THE REALIZATION
"I'd trained at multiple flight schools and none of them were doing it right. That's when I knew — if it didn't exist, we'd have to build it ourselves."
— Tyler Johnson, Co-Founder & CEO

FROM FRUSTRATION TO FLIGHT SCHOOL
Five Schools. Zero Answers.
Tyler Johnson began his flight training journey eager to become the best pilot he could be. He earned his Private, Instrument, and Commercial Pilot Certificates through an accelerated training program. But the program prioritized speed over depth — and lacked the mentorship and quality instruction Tyler was looking for. Over the next several months, he attended several other flight schools across the Arizona valley, each time encountering the same gaps: inconsistent instructors, outdated methods, and no structured curriculum. The industry had room to grow. Tyler saw the opportunity firsthand.

A Southwest Captain Changed Everything.
During his search, Tyler met a mentor who would reshape his entire understanding of aviation education — a 10-year captain at Southwest Airlines and a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). This mentor didn't just refine Tyler's skills as a pilot. He taught him how to build curriculum, develop structured lesson plans, and create a training environment that actually prepares pilots for real-world flying. For the first time, Tyler saw what aviation education could be.
When the Industry Stopped, They Started.
COVID-19 brought aviation to a standstill. Job opportunities vanished. Tyler and his soon-to-be business partner, David Lines, faced a harsh reality: their future in aviation was uncertain. Instead of waiting for the industry to recover, they took matters into their own hands. They bought an airplane and started freelance instructing — providing high-quality, one-on-one flight training to aspiring pilots who refused to stop chasing their dream.
Word Spread. Fast.
What started as a small freelance operation quickly gained traction. Tyler and David's personalized approach, focus on quality instruction, and deep commitment to their students' success set them apart from every traditional flight school in the valley. Over the next two years, their reputation grew — and they realized they had built something far bigger than just freelance flight training.
Venture West Aviation Was Born.
Tyler and David went all in. Venture West Aviation and the Airline Pilot Academy officially launched with a clear, ambitious mission: revolutionize aviation education by building a flight school that prioritizes quality instruction, mentorship, and cutting-edge technology to accelerate pilot development. No more band-aid fixes. No more "good enough." A new standard.

Explosive Growth. Uncompromised Quality.
In under three years, Venture West Aviation has grown from one airplane and two instructors into a full-scale flight training academy operating 15 aircraft, 3 state-of-the-art simulators, 35 Certified Flight Instructors, and 10 dedicated employees — all out of Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, Arizona. Every decision, every hire, every aircraft has been guided by one principle: better education produces better pilots.

Tyler Johnson
Co-Founder & CEO
Tyler's own journey through multiple flight training programs ignited the mission behind Venture West. After being mentored by a Southwest Airlines captain and DPE, he learned what aviation education should look like — and made it his life's work to build it.
Today, Tyler leads the vision and technology innovation at Venture West — including the creation of FlyLingo and Hilo Aviation, AI-driven platforms designed to transform how pilots learn.
David Lines
Co-Founder & COO
David partnered with Tyler during the most uncertain time in modern aviation — the COVID-19 shutdown. While the rest of the industry waited, David and Tyler bought an airplane and started training students one-on-one, building the foundation that would become Venture West.
David oversees daily operations, fleet management, and the student experience — ensuring that every pilot who walks through the door receives the quality, consistency, and mentorship that defines the Venture West standard.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
Every policy, every program, and every decision at Venture West traces back to these principles. They aren't marketing slogans — they're the lessons Tyler and David learned the hard way.
Quality Over Quantity
We don't cut corners and we don't rush pilots through checkrides. Every hour of training is structured, intentional, and designed to make you a better pilot — not just a certificated one.
Mentorship First
Tyler and David built Venture West because no one mentored them the way they needed. Now, every student gets the one-on-one guidance, structure, and accountability they deserve.
Aviator Assurance™
We believe so strongly in our training that we back it up. Aviator Assurance gives our academy students protection that no other flight school offers — because your success is our reputation.
Technology-Driven
From FlyLingo to Hilo Aviation, Tyler and David are building AI-powered platforms that enhance training, track performance, and personalize skill development. The future of flight training is here.
Unlimited Ground School
Ground knowledge saves lives. That's why our academy students get unlimited access to ground instruction — no session limits, no extra fees. Review material as many times as you need.
Built by Pilots, for Pilots
Tyler and David experienced every frustration in flight training firsthand. Venture West exists because they refused to accept "good enough" — and built the school they wish they'd had.
WE'RE NOT STOPPING
Tyler and David aren't just building a flight school — they're leading the charge in transforming aviation education through technology. They've created two AI-powered platforms that are changing how pilots learn, train, and track their development.
FLYLINGO
An AI-driven aviation training platform designed to help students master radio communications, aviation terminology, and ground knowledge faster and more effectively than traditional study methods.
HILO AVIATION
A cutting-edge AI-powered system that enhances flight training through performance tracking, personalized skill development, and data-driven insights that make every flight hour count.
"We're not just training pilots. We're redefining how pilots learn. Technology makes training more efficient, more personalized, and more effective — and we're building it ourselves."— Tyler Johnson

THE VISION
Venture West Aviation is more than a flight school — it's a movement to elevate aviation education, produce smarter and safer pilots, and set a new standard for training in the industry.
THIS IS THE FUTURE OF FLIGHT TRAINING. AND IT'S JUST THE BEGINNING.
OUR STORY IS WRITTEN. YOURS STARTS NOW.
Tyler and David built Venture West because they couldn't find the school they needed. Now it exists. And it's waiting for you.
