FAA minimums are not typical completion totals. All prices are estimates and may vary based on individual progress.

Commercial total time is cumulative experience, not additional commercial course hours. Instrument and cross-country requirements are separate experience categories; simulator credit depends on the device and applicable rules. The proficiency-based rows describe additional course training. Required certificates, ratings and prior flight experience still apply.

02 / Understand the rate

Hours × rate. Then the extras.

For pay-as-you-go training, multiply the hours in each category by its rate, then account for testing, equipment and other costs. Flight, simulator and ground instruction have separate rates.

Single-engine$250 / hr

Piper Archer + CFI

Multi-engine$473 / hr

Twin Comanche + CFI

Simulator$143 / hr

What changes your total

Lesson frequency & availability

Your lesson schedule, progress, aircraft maintenance and instructor availability can affect your pace. Discuss a realistic weekly routine and a cancellation plan before enrolling.

Arizona summer heat

Heat and higher density altitude can reduce aircraft performance and affect lesson planning. Use the aircraft’s approved performance data with your instructor and allow flexibility for weather changes.

Part 61 vs. Part 141

Venture West is a Part 61 school. A private-pilot airplane course has a 40-hour minimum under Part 61; an approved Part 141 course has a 35-hour flight-training minimum. Different minimums alone do not tell you the final cost. Compare the same certificates, included hours, testing fees and materials.

Checkride retests

Additional instruction, an examiner retest and aircraft rental can add to your budget. These are the planning estimates shown on our tuition page, not fixed charges for every retest.

Extra remedial training (5–10 hrs)
$1,250–$2,500
DPE re-examination fee
$1,000
Checkride aircraft rental (2 hrs)
$360–$806
Training delays
2–4 weeks

The examiner sets their fee. Actual remedial hours, rental needs and delays vary.

04 / Look beyond the aircraft

Structured program pricing

Program tuition covers a defined training path. Programs include time building and other items that individual certificate estimates do not, so those estimates should not be added together to price a program.
